Description
Thomas Tjapaltjarri (Pintupi) (circa 1964-2024) Tingari Dreaming / Rêve Tingari 2010 Acrylic on Belgian linen 120 x 30.5 cm Provenance: > Galerie Boomerang (Amsterdam) > Private collection Netherlands Thomas is known not only for his talent as a painter, but also for being, along with his family, the last Australian Aborigines to emerge from the bush in 1984, dubbed 'the last nomads'. The square motifs are a variation on the circle. They represent sacred sites where ceremonies were held during the Dreamtime. Thomas is one of the original Lost Tribe, who were the last Western Desert nomads to leave their traditional lands and join their parents in the community of Kiwirrkura in 1984. Her parents feared they had broken kinship laws and would be punished for it, so they remained isolated until it was time for their children to be old enough to be initiated and join normal Aboriginal society. His paintings reflect the traditional style of his tribe, the Pintupi. His two brothers, Walala and Warlimpirrnga, are also renowned painters. Thomas depicts the Tingari cycles in his work with a highly recognisable style. MJ
