Description
Urhobo female mask, Nigeria, wood, pigments, kaolin, H.48cm x W.12cm. The available information on the mask’s significance varies, but suggests a fundamental connection with Ohworu, a powerful water spirit. On the one hand, the mask is described as one of the ‘children of the spirit’ (emedjo), who appear when the River Niger has reached its highest level in order to bring the ‘blessing of deep water’ to the villages. On the other hand, it is said that this type of mask represents a ‘young girl’ (omotokpokpo).
