Description
17th-century Italian School* Saint Sebastian Oil on copper 24 x 18.5 cm Condition report: Framed. Cleaned by a professional restorer in June 2025 Saint Sebastian is one of the most famous saints in the Christian tradition. An officer in the Roman army in the 3rd century, he was condemned for refusing to renounce his faith. His martyrdom, during which he was pierced by arrows, has become one of the most iconic images in the history of art. From the Renaissance onwards, the greatest painters took up this subject, fascinated by the dramatic power and beauty of the figure. Beyond his martyrdom, Saint Sebastian embodies courage in the face of adversity and fidelity to one’s convictions. He is also regarded as a protector against epidemics, which explains the great popularity of his cult in Europe for centuries. Even today, his image continues to inspire artists, historians and collectors around the world.
