Frère Bey, Charles-Théodore Frère (1814–1888) Arabian horse Oil on panel, signed lower right, 12 x 19 cm Provenance: > Galerie Cretier, Vichy > Private collection, Auvergne Condition report: Framed A pupil of Jules Coignet and Camille Roqueplan, he settled in Algiers in 1836, before resuming his travels in 1839. He set up a studio in Cairo around 1853, where he became court painter to the Viceroy of Egypt, and was part of Empress Eugénie’s entourage for the opening of the Suez Canal. His work was admired by Monet and Boudin. A renowned Orientalist – one of the few to depict Beirut, Damascus and Palmyra – his paintings can now be found in numerous international museums.
