Édouard Goerg (1893–1969) Studies of faces and a female nude, 1927 Ink and pencil on both sides of the paper, signed on the front in the bottom left-hand corner, signed on the reverse in the bottom right-hand corner and dated in the top right-hand corner Partially decipherable annotation on the front: ‘there is a copperplate of this size...’ 31.5 x 23 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Auvergne Condition report: Framed, visible dimensions A pupil of Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis, and later of Bourdelle, he became a leading figure of French Expressionism during the interwar period. During the Occupation, he was one of the leaders of the Front national des arts and, after the war, served as president of the Société des peintres-graveurs français. According to Jacques Despierre, in his work “one no longer senses the craftsmanship. This is one of the aspects that astonishes us most: the way in which creation emerges from the material without one being able to discern the mechanism behind it. This is the privilege of the greatest artists.”
