Angeles Santos Torroella (1911–2013) Sunset in Barcelona Oil on canvas, signed lower left, countersigned and titled on the reverse 90 x 116 cm Provenance: > Former collection of Don Rafael Lopez Cebrian (1900–1984) > Private collection, Paris > By inheritance Condition report: With its original shipping crate, framed Ángeles Santos Torroella (1911–2013) was one of the most distinctive figures of the 20th-century Spanish avant-garde. Born in Portbou, Catalonia, she showed exceptional talent from a very early age and enjoyed dazzling success at the age of just 18 with her masterpiece *Un Mundo*, 1929 (now in the Reina Sofía Museum), a dreamlike and monumental vision that places her amongst the forerunners of Spanish Surrealism. Her work from 1928 to 1932 blends expressionism, magical realism and surrealism within a poetic and mysterious world. As a member of the intellectual circles of the Generation of ’27, she rubbed shoulders with several of the greatest Spanish artists of her time, notably Federico García Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez and Ramón Gómez de la Serna, who admired her work. She also moved in the same artistic circles as Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel and other leading figures of the Generation of ’27. Following the Spanish Civil War and her marriage to the painter Emilio Grau Sala, her style gradually shifted towards a more serene form of painting, focusing on landscapes, interiors and intimate scenes. Long forgotten, she was rediscovered from the 1990s onwards and is now recognised as one of the leading artists of the Spanish avant-garde. Don Rafael López Cebrián (Madrid 1900 – Torremolinos 1984) was the founder of the Raphaël fashion house, which operated in Paris from 1924 until the late 1950s, first at 26 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and then at 3 Avenue Georges V, where Hubert de Givenchy later set up his business.
