Description
Jacques Azéma (1910–1979) Still Life with Ceramics and a Guitar Charcoal on paper, signed lower right
18.5 x 22.5 cm Condition report: Framed, foxing Jacques Azéma was a French painter who settled in Marrakesh in 1930, where he produced the bulk of his work. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, he developed a personal style inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Giorgio de Chirico and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, blending the geometrisation of forms with a poetic vision of Morocco. A teacher at the Lycée Mangin in Marrakech and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, he influenced several generations of Moroccan artists, notably Abdelhay Mellakh, through his teaching and his resolutely modern approach to painting. Rediscovered in recent years, his work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech in 2019–2020.
