Description
Alfred Auguste Janniot (1889–1969) Bust of his studio model In plaster, height 32 cm Provenance: > Master Vincent Gérard Tasset in Angoulême, auction on 25 October 2024 – lot no. 2

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Ms Edwige Anne Demeurisse, an expert at the CNES, dated 3 October 2024. Alfred Janniot is the creator of a significant body of monumental work that is emblematic of the Art Deco aesthetic. A friend of Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann and the painter Louis Bouquet, he took part in the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, created the large stone bas-relief on the façade of the Musée de la Porte Dorée, built for the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, and adorned the rear of the Palais de Tokyo, built in 1937, with two large bas-reliefs near the fountain. His work can also be found in New York (Rockefeller Centre), Nice (Fontaine du Soleil, Place Masséna), Bordeaux (Bourse du Travail), and in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon, where his *Hommage à Jean Goujon* – originally intended for the Collector’s Garden at the 1925 Exhibition of Decorative Arts – is on display, amongst other works.
