Description
Unknown artist Untitled Kakemono (hanging scroll), Yūrei (ghost) Ink and colour on paper, mounted on silk Meiji period, 19th century H158 W37.5 cm [painting: H78.5 W25.5 cm] Wide-open eyes, a wrinkled face, an extremely emaciated body and long, dishevelled hair. The exposed black teeth indicate that this is a woman. Painted entirely in black ink, with blue eyes evoking a consuming resentment. The latticework pattern of the shoji is rendered using the shironuki technique. The contrast between the ghost and the shoji is striking and adds to the painting’s eerie atmosphere. Antique wooden collector’s box.
