A hanging scroll painted in ink and colour on silk, depicting a yūrei beside a wooden stand with a koro (incense burner) holding a burning stick of incense. Oka Buntō, born in Tango Province, moved to Kyoto and studied under Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871–1933), working in the Shijo style. He exhibited at the Bunten in 1912, 1915 and 1916 and won several prizes. His tormented expression reveals the depth of his inner conflict. Signature: Heian Buntō-gaku-hitsu. Wooden collector’s box (Christie’s 2013). Exhibition number: 448 Musée du Quai Branly.
