Ittan-momen (一反木綿) — Literally ‘a piece of cotton’ (one tan being approximately 10 x 0.28 m), this yōkai, native to Kagoshima, is a Tsukumogami: a simple strip of fabric intended for making clothes, which comes to life and flies through the night sky. Its behaviour is fearsome: it wraps itself round its victims’ necks or faces to strangle or suffocate them, making it one of the most dangerous—and sometimes deadly—Tsukumogami. In Mizuki’s work, it has become Kitarō’s mount and friend.
