Aka shita (赤舌) — The ‘red tongue’, also known as Bishagatsuku, haunts rice paddies and farming villages, particularly in the Tsugaru region. A mysterious spirit taking the form of a black, clawed cloud with a bestial snout, it reveals only its monstrous face and long claws, the rest of its body remaining concealed. It appears in summer to punish farmers who steal irrigation water: it sucks up the stolen water from the rice paddies and captures the thief with its long scarlet tongue, thus acting as a vigilante in disputes over water.
