Description
GeGeGe no Kitarō (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎) Based on the work of Shigeru Mizuki (水木しげる) Kitarō, Medama-oyaji and Neko-Musume Hand-painted double-layer celluloid used in the production of the anime Executed in ink and gouache Produced by Toei Animation, 1996–1998, Japan H23 L26.5 cm Kitarō is the last survivor of the ‘ghost tribe’: a boy who lives amongst the yōkai, protects often ungrateful humans and deals with the creatures that wish them harm. His creator, Shigeru Mizuki (1922–2015), had lost his left arm during the war in New Britain, and drew inspiration from encyclopaedias of monsters from the Edo period, notably those by Toriyama Sekien, to populate his stories. In Sakaiminato, his hometown, more than a hundred bronze statues of yōkai now line ‘Mizuki Street’. In this world, the ‘villain’ is rarely entirely evil: a father reduced to an eyeball on legs, a cat-girl who bares her fangs when provoked, a rat-man who is unscrupulous but never without charm
