GeGeGe no Kitarō (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎) Based on the work of Shigeru Mizuki (水木しげる) Bake-zōri Hand-painted celluloid accompanied by the original dôga used in the production of the anime Celluloid executed in ink and gouache Dôga drawn in graphite and coloured pencils Produced by Toei Animation, 1996–1998, Japan H24 L26.3 cm Doga glued in place Bakezōri (化草履) — ‘Magical zōri’: these traditional straw sandals, mistreated or abandoned by their owners, transform into yōkai. They then grow arms, legs and a single central eye, and run through houses at night causing chaos and noise, chanting their characteristic rhyme (‘Three eyes and two teeth!’), a reference to the three holes in the straps and the two wooden soles.
