Description
Saint Seiya (聖闘士星矢) Based on the work of Masami Kurumada (車田正美) The Grand Pope – Episode 26 / 00:11:52 Hand-painted celluloid used in the production of the anime Executed in ink and gouache Produced by Toei Animation, 1986–1989, Japan H22.8 × W26.4 cm The Grand Pope is the main antagonist and the driving force behind the entire Sanctuary arc. His masked silhouette, his white robe, his throne overlooking the twelve houses: he is the very embodiment of corrupt power in Saint Seiya. Masked, wearing a helmet, enthroned at the summit of the Sanctuary, the Grand Pope reigns over Athena’s Knights. He conceals one of animation’s most famous plot twists : beneath the mask lies Saga, the noblest of the Gold Saints, whose evil alter ego murdered the true Pope to usurp his place and attempt to kill the infant Athena. The villain, then, is not someone else: he is the dark side of a hero. A cel of the Grand Pope is a rare item, appearing far less frequently in the series than the Bronze or Gold Saints do in their action sequences.
