Bleach, by Tite Kubo, tells the story of a high school student, Ichigo Kurosaki, who becomes a ‘shinigami’ (god of death) tasked with fighting the Hollows, fallen souls that have become white-masked monsters. The real theme is ambiguity: the monster also lies within him, in the form of a Hollow side that seeks to take control. The television series comprises over 360 episodes. Renji Abarai begins as the hero’s adversary during the Soul Society arc, before becoming one of his allies: a villain who wasn’t really a villain after all.
