Description
CHINA, SHANG PERIOD, ANYANG REGION
An important ritual alcohol jug
He-shaped, dark brown-patinated bronze, standing on a small ring foot, with a large, domed body topped by a figurative lid modelled on a zoomorphic mask. The decoration, treated in slight relief, is organised in geometric registers enriched with taotie mask motifs on a leiwen background, arranged on the different sides. The whole is punctuated by stylised cicada-shaped side handles and kui dragons in relief. The straight spout is decorated with stylised banana leaf motifs. The lid features an anthropo-zoomorphic mask in high relief: an oval face with accentuated features, a broad, flattened nose, a mouth with thick, protruding lips, bulging eyes with marked pupils, surmounted by arched eyebrows, and flanked by stylised horns. Two lateral elements evoking ears complete this expressive composition. An inscription can be seen on the inside of the body.
Dimensions: 18 x 22 cm
Provenance :
Collection built up in Paris before the Second World War. Former collection of Jean Decourcière, Deluz (Haut-Doubs), formed before 1939; the object remained in the family and came from the current owner's great-uncle.
