Signs of wear and minor losses.
Our four red chalk drawings are based on Jacob Matham’s engravings, produced
around 1593 after the work of Hendrick Goltzius. Originally, this was a series
of allegorical illustrations of vices and virtues. This series, which enjoyed
great success from its very first edition, constitutes one of the greatest allegorical cycles
of Dutch Mannerism. In it, Goltzius demonstrates the full extent of his technical virtuosity,
combining formal beauty with moral instruction
