A clock known as a ‘canopy’ clock
Louis XVI period, last quarter of the 18th century
Mantel clock with columns in white marble and chiselled, gilded bronze
Dial: circular, in white enamel with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, signed ‘Premier Larré’ (signature visible on the dial), framed by a rich gilded bronze mount.
Case: the whole is supported by two fluted white marble columns, decorated with cascading foliage and gilded bronze rings, supporting an entablature surmounted by a cornice decorated with drapery, garlands of pearls and pendants. The top is adorned with an elegant circular canopy in marble and gilded bronze, embellished with decorative chains and bells. The ornate white marble base rests on gilded bronze feet with foliage motifs and features a rich decoration of beaded friezes and plant motifs.
Movement (rear): mechanical, key-wound; glass-covered back to view the movement; the balance wheel with radiating decoration is visible beneath the dial; chime via a single-hammer gong.
