This painting depicts an imaginary moment from the Saint
Domingue. Begun in 1791, it culminated in the establishment of Haiti as the first
black republic.
Merry-Joseph Blondel, a pupil of Charles Étienne Leguay and later of Jean Baptiste
Regnault, was a French painter and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1803. He produced
numerous decorative paintings, notably the ceilings for the
Council of State chamber at the Louvre Palace.
