Description
Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781–1853) The Saint-Domingue Revolt, 1823 Oil on canvas. H_46 cm W_38 cm Indistinctly signed and dated in the lower left-hand corner. Signs of wear and restoration. This painting depicts an imaginary moment from the Saint Domingue. Begun in 1791, it culminated in the establishment of Haiti as the first black republic. Merry-Joseph Blondel, a pupil of Charles Étienne Leguay and later of Jean Baptiste Regnault, was a French painter and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1803. He produced numerous decorative paintings, notably the ceilings for the Council of State chamber at the Louvre Palace.
