Description
A large, finely carved softwood plaque symbolising ‘the Republic of Italy’, with Renaissance-style decoration. At the top is a seated female figure, flanked by a man holding a book and a bas-relief depicting the she-wolf of Rome. With her left foot resting on a figure of Victory, she holds a shield bearing a cross. The lower section is adorned with an eagle with outstretched wings clutching a fasces, surmounted by a helmeted soldier. The four corners are embellished with grotesque masks, whilst the central sections form cartouches decorated with putti: the first holding a club, the second a cup. Northern Italy. 19th century.
