Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899) The Bay Oil on canvas. H 24 cm W 41 cm Labels on the reverse and a wax seal from the studio sale on the crossbar of the frame. Number in the bottom right-hand corner, difficult to read, possibly 703? Number 880 written in chalk on the reverse. Provenance: The artist’s studio, her posthumous sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 30 May–2 June 1900 (Maître Chevallier), lot 880 Sotheby’s Monaco auction, 16 June 1990, lot 659 Exhibition: Galerie Alfred Daber, ‘Paysages’ exhibition, May 1965, no. 22, Paris Our painting is one of the landscape studies still present in Rosa Bonheur’s studio at the time of her death. This is evidenced by the number written in chalk on the reverse, added at the time of the 1900 sale. Rosa Bonheur is one of the most important French female painters.
