Théodule Ribot was a French realist painter, closely associated with Henri Fantin-Latour and
the American painter James Whistler. He distinguished himself in the depiction of

powerful chiaroscuro with great mastery. From a very early stage, he was compared to the 17th-century Spanish
painter José de Ribera. This painting perfectly illustrates his style, contrasting
