Hippolyte-Camille Delpy was a pupil of Charles-François Daubigny, for
whom he harboured an admiration that extended far beyond the period of his
apprenticeship and brought him into close association with other admirers of the master, such as Camille
Pissarro and Paul Cézanne.
A painter of great talent, he stood at the crossroads between the Barbizon School and
Impressionism. His stylistic similarity to certain works by Daubigny
led several forgers to erase his signature and replace it with that of his
master. To combat this practice, from 1884 onwards Delpy affixed an
intaglio mark on the reverse of his panels, as is the case with this one.
