A versatile artist, Paul Vera (1882–1957) was a painter, engraver,
illustrator, tapestry designer, ceramist and decorator. Born in Paris, he trained
at the Académie Julian, the Ateliers d’Art Sacré, the École des
Beaux-Arts and subsequently the Académie Ranson. The Nabis painters Maurice Denis and
Paul Serusier were among his teachers. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne
from 1904 onwards.
He founded a group called L’Atelier Français with Louis Süe, André
Groult, Gustave Louis Jaulmes, Roger de La Fresnaye and André Mare.
This work, produced in the early 20th century, straddles the boundaries between the
Pont-Aven School, Expressionism and Fauvism.
The Municipal Museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye holds a significant
collection of works by Paul Vera: watercolours, paintings, tapestries, engravings,
ceramics and porcelain.
