Description
17th-century SPANISH school Ecce Homo Oil on canvas. H_93 cm W_73 cm Restored, varnish oxidised. Monograms on the reverse. Our ‘Ecce Homo’ draws on the conventions of great Spanish Baroque painting from the Golden Age, as exemplified by Murillo, Ribera and Velázquez. This painting bears a label from the Junta Delegada de Incautación, Protección y Salvamento del Tesoro Artístico, the body responsible, in the Republican zone, for seizing or collecting works of art and artefacts, notably to protect them from destruction, looting and removal during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939.
