This painting draws on the conventions of Flemish Caravaggism, which spread throughout the
former Netherlands via artists who had spent time in Italy and studied the
innovations of Caravaggio and his followers, such as Gerard Seghers, Dirck
van Baburen and Gerrit van Honthorst. Characterised by a powerful naturalism,
this movement is distinguished by a composition centred closely on the
figures and by the use of very pronounced chiaroscuro.
