Description
Pier Francesco FOSCHI (1502–1567), follower of Madonna and Child Oil on panel. H 82.5 cm W 61 cm Lifting and losses. Related works: Pier Francesco FOSCHI, Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist (location unknown) Benvenuto Tisi, known as Il Carofalo, Virgin and Child before a curtain with a mountainous landscape in the background, oil on panel, 75.3 × 56.4 cm, Sotheby’s New York auction, 30 January 2014 The artist of our painting has chosen to depict the Virgin in a pose of support and protection towards Christ. Modest and majestic, the Madonna holds her son standing on her lap, a fairly common iconography in 16th-century Italy, used by artists such as Pier Francesco Foschi, a pupil of Andrea del Sarto, and Benvenuto Tisi. The bright red hue of the young woman’s dress also reveals the influence of Mannerism, which, spurred on by artists such as Michelangelo, Correggio, Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, became one of the principal Italian movements of the High Renaissance.
