Description
A significant and delicate tapestry from the Aubusson Manufactory Foliage with Birds Inspired by the cartoons of Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686–1755), an 18th-century animal painter who served as director of the Beauvais Manufactory. Late 18th / early 19th century Lined and braided tapestry Dimensions: H_223 cm W_260 cm Good overall condition In this scene of foliage and birds, the birds are not merely decorative elements. They are placed in the foreground to lend depth to the work and carry strong symbolic meaning. The heron or wading bird in the foreground is the king of the foliage, perched near a pond; it symbolises vigilance, calm and contemplative solitude in the face of nature. The pheasant or partridge, recognisable by their long, meticulously drawn tail feathers, symbolise immortality and royal splendour. The small birds in the trees symbolise freedom and the life that animates the forest. This beautiful ensemble is surrounded by lush, finely drawn woodland vegetation. Also visible in the background are the foundations of a lock, a watermill, a stone bridge or small sluice gates on a watercourse – all of which are the unmistakable hallmarks of 18th-century compositions inspired by J.B. Oudry. The border is also typically inspired by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, featuring rows of gilded shells that create the effect of mouldings on Louis XV-style picture frames and imitate the carved wooden Rococo frames with shell motifs that were in vogue in the salons of Louis XV (this type of border is similar to that found on the Behagle panels from the Royal Manufactory of Beauvais) Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN - Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
