The original was painted in 1628–1629 by Nicolas Poussin for St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Painted between 1628 and 1629 by Nicolas Poussin to adorn St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the painting depicts one of the torments suffered by Saint Erasmus of Fornia. Seized by Napoleon’s troops in 1797, the painting did not return to Rome until 1817.
Our painting faithfully reproduces Poussin’s iconic composition with precision and fine brushwork. It was common practice to copy works by great masters such as Poussin. It is therefore highly likely that our painting is the work of a skilled 18th-century French artist who was staying in Rome.
