Louise de La Vallière (1644–1710), Duchess of La Vallière, was the favourite of
Louis XIV in the 1660s and bore him several children. Of a
reserved and devout nature, she found it difficult to cope with her position at court and the rise
of Madame de Montespan. In 1674, she renounced high society and entered the
Carmelite convent, where she remained until her death.
Pierre Mignard was one of the most important court painters during the
time of the Duchess of La Vallière, whom he depicted on several occasions. His
success was such that he became a direct rival to Charles Le Brun, then
the King’s Principal Painter, which gave rise to a significant artistic rivalry between the
two artists.
