Description
Gaetano MERCHI (1747–1823), after
Terracotta bust of an actress as Urania, probably depicting Mademoiselle Guimard. It rests on a circular, moulded white marble pedestal set upon a square base painted to imitate green sea marble.
Paris. Last quarter of the 18th century.
H_57.5 cm (Total)
H_42 cm (Bust)
The facial features are similar to those in other portraits believed to be of Marie-Madeleine Guimard (1743–1816), known as Mademoiselle Guimard, including the marble bust by Merchi from 1779, now held at the BNF, the Opéra Library and Museum (inv. MUS.143m).
This bust is comparable to the portraits of actors, singers and dancers created in Paris during the last quarter of the 18th century by the Italian sculptor Gaetano Merchi, originally from Brescia.
