Description
Lithographic embroidery panel: antependium (altar front)
Italian Barochetto style (Genoa), equivalent to the French Louis XV style, circa 1740–60
Dimensions: L_247 cm H_0.95 cm
This panel and the secondary panel were intended for a large-scale side altar or tabernacle.
A satin or silk ground, embroidered with silk threads, featuring a central floral motif rising from a gilded shell, surrounded by garlands of polychrome flowers and foliage against a background forming a broad, stylised console.
The trompe l’œil architectural structure underpins the composition, reinforcing the idea of a layout designed to create a visual echo within the same sacred space.
