When the Gherardini family settled in France during the 17th century, they
Frenchified their name to Girardin. Alexandre François Louis, Count
de Girardin, was a descendant of this illustrious lineage. His father, René-Louis de Girardin,
Marquis de Brégy, pursued a brief military career before becoming
Lord of Ermenonville, in the Oise, where he created the first English-style gardens
in France. He was a friend of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who died at
his estate in July 1778.
Alexandre François Louis, for his part, was a politician, soldier and painter.
His military career earned him the rank of captain of dragoons and the title of
Knight of the Legion of Honour. After training under the landscape architect
Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld, the Count of Girardin produced portraits and
views of the family estate at Ermenonville and its lush surroundings. The park
at Ermenonville, which probably inspired this painting, was, in the early 19th
century, one of the most popular destinations for artists and a showcase for the excellence of
the English-style garden on a French estate. In the 1820s, he exhibited
several times at the Salon in the category ‘landscape painters, animal painters and
architectural painters’.
Our landscape is reminiscent of the compositions of Pierre-Henri de
Valenciennes, Pierre-Joseph Wallaert and Pierre-Athanase Chauvin, who were
very much in vogue at the time.
