Description
French School, c. 1750, a follower of François BOUCHER (1703–1770)
The Courtesan in Love.
The Magnificent One.
A pair of canvases that can be hung as a pair above a doorway, in the style of grisailles.
H_60 cm W_130 cm
H_60 cm W_140 cm (for The Courtesan in Love).
The subjects of our paintings are taken from Boucher’s compositions, engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin (1684–1755), illustrating La Fontaine’s Fables (1743). The rectangular format, curved at the bottom, and the grisaille technique suggest compositions designed to be integrated into wood panelling, probably as over-door panels or trumeaux intended to adorn an aristocratic drawing room.
