Dhal rondache, North India, Rajasthan, late 19th century
A circular steel rondache with four domed knobs emerging from a dense engraved decoration featuring plant motifs including lotuses, animal motifs dominated by felines, and deities seated cross-legged in medallions. This decoration is arranged around a whirling solar face, that of the Hindu deity Surya, the whole piece enhanced with gold.
Also included is an Indo-Persian-style helmet, its domed crown featuring fluted decoration and surmounted by a three-sided spike, with two quill holders at the front framing an openwork aigrette bearing the Bismillah calligraphed in Arabic Thuluth script, the sides of the dome adorned with gold-embellished plant scrolls, its base inscribed in Arabic with the opening lines of the Fatiha.
