Johann Julius Heinsius was a painter active in Germany, the Netherlands and
France. His portrait of Madame Roland has inspired many artists. Painted
in 1792, it was initially owned by Louis-Philippe before becoming part of the
collections at the Palace of Versailles. Madame Roland, a leading figure of the
French Revolution, played a prominent role within the Girondin faction. She
was guillotined in Paris in 1793.
