Description
A large clock featuring deities in chiselled, gilded and patinated bronze, forming a central panel, framed by a frieze of vine shoots and adorned with a lyre and cherubs beneath festooned drapery. It is flanked by two figures encircled by grapes, each holding bunches of grapes. The first depicts Heracles clad in the skin of the Nemean lion, whilst the second depicts Dionysus clad in a goatskin. The whole is supported by a black marble plinth embellished with a Bacchanalian scene depicting an elephant ridden by a young Bacchus, in a procession. The front corners are adorned with elephant heads. The base is framed by a broad acanthus frieze and rests on feet in the form of winged lions. The gilded bronze dial features twelve white enamel discs indicating the hours in blue Roman numerals. The bronze hands are arrow-shaped. Paris. Restoration period. Circa 1835/40
