Description
From the circle of Jan PORTIELJE (1829–1908) Portrait of a young Greek woman Oil on canvas. H_ 54.5 cm W_ 45 cm Restorations and Damage Monogram ‘M. P.’ in the bottom right-hand corner. This portrait of a young woman belongs to the Orientalist movement that swept through Europe in the 19th century and drew inspiration, in particular, from the Greek War of Independence between 1821 and 1829. This movement was championed by artists such as Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, Léon Cogniet, Théodore Chassériau and, above all, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Eugène Delacroix. The style and composition of this painting bring it close to the work of Jan Portielje. Expert: Artéon - Expert: Quentin BONNEFOY - Artéon
