Our small oil painting depicts one of the famous ‘Demoiselles de Fontenailles’. This rock formation was created by erosion caused by the waves gnawing away at the limestone. Legend has it that three sisters were petrified with terror at the sight of their fiancés’ shipwreck, swept away by the raging waves.
Our painting is probably a sketch or a reworking of a larger-scale composition, of which an engraving exists.
