Originally from Germany, Rudolf Henneberg settled in Paris in the
1850s, where he studied under Thomas Couture. He exhibited at the Salon, where he was awarded a
medal in 1857. He moved to Italy in the 1860s and returned there the
following decade.
Several of his works are held at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
His battle scenes echo the masterpieces of his teacher.
Characterised by a strong narrative intensity, they demonstrate his skill in
depicting turmoil. His portraits, by contrast, are imbued with a great
poetic tenderness, which is evident here in this couple embracing in the woods.
