Restorations and damage.
This painting depicts The Last Supper, Christ’s final meal. Immortalised by
Leonardo da Vinci in his work commissioned for the refectory of the convent of
Santa Maria delle Grazie, this composition stands as one of the pinnacles of
Italian Quattrocento painting.
Hippolyte Flandrin, a pupil of Ingres, is counted amongst the leading figures
of the revival of French religious painting in the 19th century. His discovery
of the Italian masters, and in particular of Quattrocento painting, had a
profound influence on his work. Our painting draws on these traditions inherited from Italy
whilst giving primacy to drawing, in perfect keeping with the teachings of the
Ingres school.
