Our impressive ‘Bather’ is the work of the Russian-born painter Carl
von Neff. Born to a mother of French origin, a governess at the Püssi manor house, he
underwent artistic training at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts before
settling in St Petersburg in 1826. At that time, the city was the capital of the
Russian Empire of the Romanovs. There, he developed his painting style, focusing on court portraits and
genre scenes, in which he excelled. Female figures, such as
bathers, occupy a special place in his work.
As Dean of the St Petersburg Academy of Painting and court painter to
Nicholas I, his position enabled him to become, in 1864, curator of the
Hermitage Museum. Halfway between genre scenes and classical ideals,
Neff’s bathers proved a great success with his
Russian aristocratic clientele. They represent one of the most captivating and,
today, most sought-after aspects of his work, contrasting with the
monumental nature of his official commissions.
