Born in Venice in 1548, Bianca Cappello came from the Italian aristocracy. She became Grand Duchess of Tuscany following her marriage to Francesco I de’ Medici. During her lifetime, she was portrayed several times by Alessandro Allori. Several centuries later, her story and her beauty continue to inspire painters and sculptors fascinated by the Renaissance, who seek to capture a fantasised ideal rather than a faithful representation of reality.
