Description
Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875–1942) Elegant Pencil and gouache on paper. H 51 cm W 33 cm Freckles Painter, illustrator, caricaturist, poster artist, sculptor and interior designer, Leonetto Cappiello, of Italian origin, was a popular figure who wore many hats. His lithographs left their mark on the French art scene on just as much as those of Jules Chéret, Alfons Mucha and, of course, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, whom he met in 1899, a year after settling in Paris. He collaborated with the magazines *Le Rire*, *L’Assiette au beurre* and *Le Cri de Paris…) and made a name for himself in advertising by designing posters for Poulain chocolate, Cachou Lajaunie, Lesieur olive oil, Campari, Longines watches, Klaus chocolate and even François Coty’s perfume, La Rose Jacqueminot. Cappiello revolutionised the advertising poster by establishing a minimalist style: in the foreground, a bold and colourful image creating a striking contrast with the dark, neutral background against which it stands out. His lithographs made a lasting impression on the public and were a resounding success. He became a naturalised French citizen in 1930.
