Description
RIK SLABBINCK (1914-1991) Landscape in Provence Large oil on canvas signed lower right. Old exhibition label on the back. Size : 80 x 130 cm Provenance : Private collection Bruges Belgium, by descent, acquired from the artist. - A Belgian painter born in Bruges who trained at the Academy of his native city and at Saint-Lucas in Ghent, he joined the studio of Constant Permeke, whose Flemish expressionism dominated his work until 1945. He then abandoned monochrome tones with subtle chiaroscuro for a brilliant palette of warm colours, the play of shadows and the carefully treated relief of the surface. A member of the La Route Libre group, Rik Slabbinck was one of the founders of the Jeune Peinture Belge movement, from which he resigned in 1947. He tried to renew the plastic form by paying more attention to structure. The absence of perspective and the almost monochrome flat tints show an influence from the abstract movement. From the 1950s onwards, his colours were no longer derived from reality but determined by composition. He showed a preference for the palette knife, using brushes to create oil sketches. In this way, he created works that exuded a strong sense of synthesis.
