An Italian-born painter, pastellist, watercolourist and surrealist drawer of portraits and figures, she is also an engraver, illustrator, theatre designer and writer. She began painting at the age of 17 in Milan, adopting the classicism and tonal painting of Carra.
In 1937 she moved to Paris and met André Breton and the Surrealists, who would influence her career. Léonor Fini made friends with a wide range of artists, including Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, Jean Cocteau, Giorgio De Chirico and Alberto Moravia.
Leonor Fini loved cats, which she often portrayed, but it was her portraits of androgynous women and young men that made her famous. For her, women were witches, priestesses, beautiful and sovereign.
