Description
GERARD HOLMENS (1934-1995)
Untitled, ca.1975
Beautiful sculpture in Carrara marble with polychrome decoration. Small chips on the back and under the base. A one-off like all the artist's marble works.
The motifs are reminiscent of two watercolours by Holmens from the same period.
Dimensions: 37 x 27.5 x 15 cm

A Belgian sculptor and draughtsman born in Ostend, he trained at the Academies of Ostend, Antwerp and Ghent before perfecting his skills at the Grande Chaumière in Paris under the guidance of Ossip Zadkine. Holmens evolved from stylised figuration to abstraction, and from 1980 he settled in the South of France.
Plant compositions and imaginary animals take shape in the shiny marble under his hand. Holmens' mobile marble structures are particularly popular with the stone-loving public, as he never creates multiples but only single pieces.
Over the last ten years, he has mainly confined himself to mini-sculptures in white and black marble, often tinged with humour. In 2001, a retrospective exhibition will be held at the Stedelijk Museum in Ostend.
