A French painter born in Blois, Paul Emile Vernon studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, where he was awarded first prize for drawing in 1888. He went on to study under William Bouguereau and Auguste Truphème at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1898 and exhibited there regularly until 1913, notably showing the portraits that made his reputation.
Vernon painted a few murals, such as the one for the theatre in Châtellerault in 1899, but, in a style not unlike that of Enjolras, he also excelled in paintings of women and children in bright colours and bucolic settings.
