Description
JEAN CHRYSOSTOME STUMPFF (1731-1806), Master in 1766
Louis XVI period flap desk, Paris circa 1770
Rectangular in shape with canted sides, made of veneered wood such as rosewood, violet and rosewood, with a fine inlaid decoration of geometric motifs in trompe l'oeil perspective. The front opens to reveal two lower leaves and a flap revealing six drawers and pigeon-holes. Richly decorated with original chased and gilded bronzes, including an elegant Greek frieze, the sides adorned with stylised acanthus leaf falls and rosettes. Covered with red marble from the Ardennes.
Dimensions: 140 x 98 x 41 cm
Born in Swabia, Stumpff set up as a freelance craftsman in the rue Saint-Nicolas, where he remained after obtaining his master's degree in 1766. His stamp appears on numerous pieces of furniture in rosewood veneer and lacquer of Far Eastern inspiration, decorated with geometric marquetry.
Stumpff owes his fame above all to his highly original trompe-l'oeil marquetry, imitating cubes and crosses in relief, a style that enjoyed great success around 1770. Frequently using Greek-style filleting, his Louis XV, Transitional and Louis XVI furniture is distinguished by its remarkable quality of execution.
